Honey Supers

Overview

Typical Langstroth Hive Parts

Honey supers are hive boxes added to the hive above the brood chamber.

Typically honey supers are medium depth. They can be far too heavy if they are deep depth.

A queen excluder is often added between the brood chamber and the honey supers. This prevents the queen from laying eggs in the boxes to be used for honey.

The Flow Hive is a popular form of honey super which does not require an extractor to remove the honey.

Usage Notes

7-frame Spacer Tool
for an 8-frame Super

There are spacer tools which can be used to add more space between the frames. This extra space encourages the bees to pull the cells out further and store more honey in the frame. And, by being pulled out further, uncapping the frame is easier when extracting the honey.
