Overview

Typical Langstroth Hive Parts

The hive needs a roof, and the telescoping cover provides just that.

The typical design seen these days is like shown to the left.

There are some newer designs like the Ultimate Hive Cover made by Bee Smart Designs. These are said to be better at improving airflow and enhancing hive ventilation.

Usage Notes

If you do not use a strap to hold your hive boxes together, then you will need to add a weight to the top of the hive to prevent critters from opening the top of the hive to get at the honey. A brick is commonly used for this.

If you use a lighter cover like the Ultimate Hive Cover, this is required as the plastic cover is not heavy and will be easily blown off by the wind.
