Shim
Overview

An Imirie Shim

A shim is a "spacer" in the hive.
One use for them is when the beekeeper wants to put something temporarily in the hive (e.g., winter feed patties).
Another use is to provide an upper entrance. This is commonly called an Imirie shim, and is the dark blue piece in the picture to the right.
Notes on Making One
Historically, shims were often made by cutting off 1-2 inches from an old hive box. The height of the shim is dictated by the purpose.
