Langstroth Hive
Overview
The hive designed by Reverend Langstroth in 1851 has evolved over the years, and provides many benefits. For the new beekeeper, this design uses long-established standards for the pieces which can be made by a decent woodworker or sourced from many vendors.
As it has been around so long, the management practices needed when using this hive are well-understood. Finding a good mentor or other training for this approach is more easily found that when using other hive styles. And, there are a plethora of books and videos to help the new beekeeper.
A Langstroth hive is an excellent way to get start in beekeeping. As you master that approach, other hive styles (e.g., a horizontal hive) may be something you want to try.
