Is It a Colony or a Hive?
These terms get used interchangeably quite often. For clarity, the terms used in this site are noted below.
Colony
A colony is a group of eusocial insects that exhibit:
- cooperative brood care,
- reproductive division of labor, and
- overlapping generations.
Honeybees are certainly a colony.
Hive
A hive is a man-made structure used to house a honeybee colony.
